The State Fair of West Virginia plays host to thousands of animals annually!  From Junior Livestock shows to Open Livestock, Horse competitions, racing and more.  If you're interested in learning more about the State Fair's various livestock programs please read the information below.

 

Now available for all participants, 2008 Exhibitors Guide.  To view the 2008 Livestock Schedule and Check-In, please click hereEntries for the 2008 Livestock shows are now being accepted.  All entries must be received by the State Fair office by 12 noon, July 12, 2008.

Junior Livestock Show -

Children from all across West Virginia are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Annual Junior Livestock Show.  Participants must be current members of a West Virginia 4-H or FFA organization.  To view State 4-H & FFA Junior Livestock Show Rules or to see more details on individual livestock categories, please click on the appropriate link below.

Open Horse Show -

ImageDuring the first several days of the Fair, August 8 - August 13, majestic horses of various breeds will call the "Bluegrass Bowl" home as they show.  Each day of the schedule is full of classes that will excite horse lovers of all ages.

Draft Horse Pulls -

Image The State Fair of West Virginia is proud to offer several different horse events.  Including the Draft Horse Pull.  If you've never witnessed a Draft Horse Pull, make time during the 2008 State Fair to watch these magnificent animals.  Using a solid bottomed sled for pulling, teams of horses will start with a minimum pulling weight of 3000 pounds.  The sled and weights must be pulled a minimum of 27 1/2 feet, in one pull, to qualify and continue in the competition.  Weight is increased for the second pull and for each succeeding pull according to the judge's decision.

Draft Horse Pulls will take place on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 9 am.  The Power Pull of Champions will begin on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 7 pm.  Both pulls can be viewed from the Grandstand.

Harness Racing -

ImageHarness Racing events at the State Fair of West Virginia continue to be an annual tradition for folks of all ages.  The 2008 Harness Racing schedule is listed below.

 

 

  

  • Monday, August 11, 2008 - 1 pm Post Time
  • Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 1 pm Post Time
  • Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 1 pm Post Time
  • Thursday, August 14, 2008 - 1 pm Post Time 

Stay around for the 2008 Cow Pie Throwing Contest!  The "Throw" will take place after the first Harness Race of the day for each of the 4 days.  Participants will compete by throwing authentic "cow pies" for distance.  To enter the contest, submit your entry at the ARS-USDA booth, located in the WVU Building.  Five "contestants" will be drawn from all entries each day.

Youth Center Exhibits -
